Facilities
Riverway
The $30 million dollar Riverway project, located on the magnificent Ross Rover frontage is fast becoming one of the most exciting destinations the region has to offer, combining residential, commercial, cultural, sports and leisure facilities.
A council initiative, when completed, Riverway will stretch along 11km of the Ross River from Black Weir to the Ross Dam, just 300m from the River Parks doorstep!
Infrastructure
Billions of dollars are being spent on infrastructure to meet the growth of Townsville-Thuringowa including:
- New roads
- A re-developed Townsville CBD
- A $1 billion lifestyle precinct including a new cruise ship terminal on the Western Breakwater
- Re-development of obsolete railway land, a new Flinders Street West station and a rail museum; and
- A new gas-fired power station, valued at $350 million, will be operational from late 2009
Roads
A $119 million ring road is being built in four stages. It embraces the 5.3km Douglas Arterial, completed in 2005 and a new bridge across Ross River to provide a fast road link to James Cook University, the hospital and Lavarack Barracks.
Stages 2 and 3 will be completed by 2008. This connects to the Bruce Highway and provides better access to the northern beaches.
Stage 4 is a 1-km section connecting Shaw Road across the Bohle Plains to the Bruce Highway.
Planning and design valued at $3.7 million is allocated this financial year and next for two stages of the Townsville Port Access Road. Stage 1 consists of the Stuart Bypass. Stage 2 is the Eastern Corridor.
North Ward Road will be upgraded at a cost of $8.8 million.
